Raya Mlyakova: Life in Miami, Florida After Two Months

When Raya Mlyakova first stepped onto American soil, her first reaction was a mixture of awe and curiosity.

“My first impression was that this is a completely new world – everything felt so different from what I knew back home,” she recalls. “At the same time, it was exciting, because I had the chance to start something new and big. Honestly, I adjusted pretty quickly, and now I already feel at home.”

Academics & Studies

Raya is pursuing a degree in Psychology, but her schedule is anything but one-dimensional. Her classes range from psychology to criminal law, Catholicism, composition, and even microcomputer applications.

“Almost every subject has something to do with human behavior and learning how to approach people with respect,” she explains. “In psychology we focus on cognitive processes and the nervous system; in criminal law, we study Florida’s justice system; in composition, we practice writing different kinds of essays; Catholicism explores religion and the teachings of Jesus; and microcomputer applications are very practical – we learn how to use Windows effectively.”

Florida Lifestyle

If there’s one thing Raya is certain about, it’s that she has found the right place for herself.

“Florida is exactly where I belong – I absolutely love the warm weather, and here it’s guaranteed all year round. People are incredibly open and positive, and the beach is just around the corner. I love how lively it always is, especially here in Miami. I can’t wait to explore more places like Universal and Disney when I have the time.”

Campus Life & Sports

Life on campus has given her a strong sense of independence while also keeping her connected to her teammates.

“Campus life is really exciting. You learn to be independent, but at the same time you live with your teammates and do almost everything together. Everything is close – the gyms, the academic buildings, the dining halls – which creates the feeling of a small, close-knit community. The university also takes great care to make sure all students feel comfortable and safe here.”

Looking Ahead

For Raya, the balance between academics and athletics makes this experience truly fulfilling.

“I’d definitely give it a 10/10,” she says with a smile. “Coming here was the best decision I could have made. I’m getting a high-level education while also being part of a great team. My coaches and professors are amazing, and most importantly, I feel genuinely happy here.”
